Offshore Wind Energy in Poland
In Poland there are currently no operating offshore wind farms and none are under construction. Such situation results from the adverse legal conditions and provisions, which were in force until 2011. There is, however, a great potential for the development of OWF in Polish maritime areas.
Polish maritime areas cover 33 000 km2, out of which the areas indicated by the minister in charge of maritime economy, on the basis of analyses carried out by the Maritime Institute in Gdańsk, to be available for the potential development of offshore wind energy cover 2 000 km2.
Currently,in the first preparatory phase there are about 20 projects for OWF, which target total capacity should exceed 10 GW. Polish Energy Policy by 2030 and the National Action Plan assume the construction of 0.5 GW of OWF by 2020. Theinvestors are planning to commission by 2025 about 5 GW of OWF and by 2030 another 5 GW.
OWF projects are prepared for the Polish EEZ, within three location groups: south-western part of the Polish EEZ, middle part of the EEZ on the north slope of Ławica Słupska and in the northern part of the EEZ, on Ławica Środkowa.
